WoW Forever professions: choosing and planning a pair
Two primary slots, a 300 skill cap, and a choice that costs weeks to reverse. What the profession pairs are worth, and what Blizzard has actually said about professions in Forever.
Fact-checked against Blizzard's published details. .
The structure you are planning around
Two primary profession slots per character, plus three secondary professions — cooking, fishing and first aid — that cost no slot at all. The skill cap is 300, as it was in Classic: the beta's Legacy Challenges mark 150, 225 and 300 as the milestones for each crafting profession.
Switching a primary profession later means levelling from scratch. In a game with a permanent 60 cap and no expansion to reset the economy, that is a more expensive mistake than it is in modern WoW, which is why the pairing decision deserves more thought than the levelling speed does.
The pairs that feed each other
| Crafting | Gathering partner | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Blacksmithing | Mining | Consumes ore faster than any other profession |
| Engineering | Mining | Ore and parts, continuously |
| Alchemy | Herbalism | Herbs are awkward to buy in bulk |
| Leatherworking | Skinning | Materials come off things you were killing anyway |
| Tailoring | None needed | Cloth drops from humanoids, not from nodes |
| Enchanting | Tailoring | No gatherer exists; craft cloth items to disenchant |
The saving from pairing is not a discount, it is the materials bill disappearing. Levelling blacksmithing on bought ore is among the most expensive things in the game; levelling it alongside mining is ordinary. That is the single biggest lever on what a profession costs, whether you do it yourself or buy it.
What Forever adds
Three changes matter. The first is camping, a new system built on professions. A campfire takes the Cooking skill to make, and every profession can craft objects to set around it — a blacksmith's anvil, an alchemist's mana well, a leatherworker's tent. Anyone who rests at the camp for a minute picks up their effects: stand-ins for class buffs at slightly lower strength, rested experience, or a crafting station in the middle of nowhere. It gives every profession something to offer a group, and it is why cooking is worth having on every character.
The second is blueprint recipes, which are the recipes for the better camp objects and drop from dungeon bosses, so a fully capable crafter is a levelling job plus a hunting job. The third is the Legacy System: each of the six crafting professions gives an account-wide Legacy Point at 150, 225 and 300, and one of the three Legacy trees is Professions outright, with perks for faster skill-ups, more materials from nodes and cheaper vendors.
The Legacy point matters more than it sounds. Legacy progression is account-wide — 65 points earnable at launch, 16 spendable per character — so profession work done anywhere on your account contributes to a pool the rest of your roster draws on. Profession levelling on an alt is no longer purely that alt's business.
Timing against the launch economy
WoW Forever launches 4 November 2026 into a completely fresh economy, and the first raid wave lands 9 December. Those two dates set the profession calendar: raw material prices peak and swing hardest in the first fortnight, and consumable demand steps up permanently in December when flasks and elixirs start being consumed every week.
- Gathering professions pay best early, while supply has not caught up with demand
- Alchemy pays best from December, when raiding makes consumables recurring
- Tailoring pays steadily throughout, because bags sell to everyone at every level
- Engineering does not pay for itself at any point and is taken for utility
Frequently asked questions
What is the profession cap in WoW Forever?
300. The beta's Legacy Challenges set the milestones for each crafting profession at 150, 225 and 300.
How many professions can you have in WoW Forever?
Two primary professions per character, plus all three secondary ones: cooking, fishing and first aid.
What is camping in WoW Forever?
A new system where a Cooking-made campfire can be surrounded by objects crafted by each profession. Resting there for a minute grants their buffs, which stand in for class buffs at slightly lower strength, plus rested experience.
Which professions should I pair?
Mining with blacksmithing or engineering, herbalism with alchemy, skinning with leatherworking. Tailoring needs no gatherer and is usually taken with enchanting.
What are blueprint recipes?
The recipes for the more advanced camping objects, confirmed to drop from dungeon bosses. Which drop where has not been published, so a seller naming a specific one is guessing.
Do professions feed the Legacy System?
Yes. Each of the six crafting professions gives a Legacy Point at 150, 225 and 300, eighteen in total. Gathering and secondary professions give none. There is also a dedicated Professions tree to spend points in.
Which profession makes the most gold?
Early on, gathering — prices peak in the first fortnight after launch. From 9 December, alchemy, because raiding makes consumables recurring. Tailoring is steady throughout.
Can I change professions later?
Only by levelling the new one from scratch. With a permanent 60 cap and no expansion resetting the economy, that is an expensive mistake to make.
