The Skyborne: classes, racials and Zephras Isle
A new playable race on both factions, with a class list that differs by faction, five racial abilities and the only starting zone in the game that is not twenty years old — and it is not included in the subscription.

Who the Skyborne are
The Skyborne are elves: descendants of Highborne who settled among the air elementals of Zephras Isle and made a pact with them. They are the first race in the game that can join either faction. The Alliance Skyborne are the High Order, who want the arcane knowledge of their ancestors back; the Horde Skyborne are the Windshapers, who hold to the elemental pact. The split is not only flavour — it decides one racial ability and one class.
| High Order (Alliance) | Windshapers (Horde) | |
|---|---|---|
| Classes | Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Druid, Mage | Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Druid, Shaman |
| Faction racial | Read Ley Line | Skysight |
| Starting zone | Zephras Isle, 1–12 | Zephras Isle, 1–12 |
The race is not part of a WoW subscription. Playing a Skyborne, and the Zephras Isle start that comes with it, needs one of the upgrade packs, the cheapest being the Skyborne Heroic Pack at $29.99. Everything else in Forever — every other race, all nine classes, the whole level 1 to 60 game — is included with the subscription.
Skyborne racial abilities
Three racials are shared and one differs by faction. These are the abilities as they stand in the beta, so treat the numbers as current rather than final.
| Racial | Who | What it does in the beta |
|---|---|---|
| Walk on Air | Both | A slow fall you can steer, on a 2-minute cooldown |
| Wind Blessed | Both | A passive 1% haste |
| Elemental Insight | Both | 5% more damage against elementals |
| Read Ley Line | High Order | Doubles health and mana regeneration; long-lasting near a ley line, 30 seconds otherwise |
| Skysight | Windshapers | 10% movement speed; long-lasting near an elemental convergence, 30 seconds otherwise |
None of that makes the Skyborne the strongest choice for any class, and early assessments put their racials behind the best of the existing ones for raiding and PvP. What they offer is comfort while levelling: less time sitting to eat and drink on one faction, quicker travel on the other.
Why the starting zone matters more than usual
Every other route through WoW Forever's first twelve levels is a route people have run for twenty years. Zephras Isle is not. It has been playable since the beta opened on 17 September 2026, so there are now people who know it — but weeks of knowledge, not decades, which means the usual advantage a levelling seller holds is smaller here than anywhere else in the game.
The practical consequence for anyone buying a 1–12 service: if you are rolling Skyborne, say so. A seller quoting a traditional starting zone route cannot deliver the same job, and a seller who has actually levelled through Zephras Isle in the beta is worth more than one quoting from a level range alone.
Where the zone sits in the climb
1–12 puts Zephras Isle immediately below Hall of Thanes, the lowest of the nine new dungeons at 13–18. A Skyborne character therefore moves from an entirely new zone straight into an entirely new instance, which is an unusually unfamiliar opening stretch for a game built on twenty-year-old content.
After that the route rejoins the rest of the game. Ruins of Lordaeron follows at 15–20, and from there the climb threads the classic world and the remaining new dungeons up to the permanent cap at 60.
What a new race does to a launch
New playable races reliably distort the first fortnight of any World of Warcraft launch, and there is no reason Forever will be different. A disproportionate share of characters created on 4 November 2026 will be Skyborne, which concentrates them all into the same unfamiliar starting zone at the same time — competing for the same quest objectives, the same spawns and the same early auction house.
That has two practical consequences. The first twelve levels will be slower on launch day than they will be a fortnight later, which is an argument for either starting immediately and accepting the crowd or waiting a week and having the zone to yourself. And the early Skyborne economy will be strange: whatever the race's starting zone drops will be abundant and cheap, while everything they need and cannot gather locally will be expensive.
If you are buying a 1–12 service around launch, that congestion is worth mentioning to the seller rather than assuming they have priced it in. A route through a crowded new zone is genuinely slower work than the same route a month later, and an estimate built on beta conditions will not survive contact with launch day.
Frequently asked questions
What is the new race in WoW Forever?
The Skyborne, elves descended from Highborne who made a pact with air elementals. They start on Zephras Isle at levels 1–12 and can join either faction.
What classes can Skyborne play?
Warrior, Hunter, Rogue and Druid on both factions. Alliance Skyborne can also be Mages and Horde Skyborne can also be Shamans.
Which faction are the Skyborne?
Both. You choose at character creation: the High Order for the Alliance or the Windshapers for the Horde. The choice changes one racial ability and whether Mage or Shaman is available.
Is the Skyborne race free?
No. The Skyborne and the Zephras Isle starting zone need an upgrade pack, starting with the $29.99 Skyborne Heroic Pack. The rest of WoW Forever is included with a subscription.
What are the Skyborne racials?
Walk on Air, a steerable slow fall; Wind Blessed, 1% haste; Elemental Insight, 5% damage against elementals; and either Read Ley Line for the Alliance, which boosts regeneration, or Skysight for the Horde, which boosts movement speed. Those are the beta values.
What level range is Zephras Isle?
1–12, which runs straight into Hall of Thanes, the lowest of the nine new dungeons at 13–18.
Do I need a different leveling service for a Skyborne character?
Effectively yes — the 1–12 route through Zephras Isle has nothing in common with a traditional starting zone. Say which you are rolling when you order.
